Diablo 4 Item Upgrades
The upgrade of an item allows players to raise the level of their equippable items such as trinkets, armor, weapons and weapons over a certain threshold. You can upgrade items at any NPC that accepts the appropriate currency.

Costs
Upgrades can increase the physical power of gear, its spell power, and health (for rings and armor) or add a bonus effect to it when it is in your inventory. You can either make upgrade components or buy them from vendors. You can also loot or drop them from other players or get them as a reward. Upgrade components can be inserted into armor, weapons and trinkets. They can also be slid on gathering tools. Most upgrade components can only be replaced with an Upgrade Extractor. However, there are exceptions for glyphs, which can be salvaged by using the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool.
Based on the type of item, upgrading an item may cost Dilithium or gold. In addition, some upgrades require Flightstones and/or crests. The amount of Flightstones and Crests needed to upgrade an item is determined by the level of the item. Blizzard also sets a maximum level for upgrades. Upgrades to the highest level can be costly particularly when it comes to upgrading PvE gear.
The upgrades to items can also alter the type of ammunition a weapon uses or damage die size and size, alter its operational or unwieldy specific weapon property, or alter the hand requirements. Certain upgrades can alter the appearance of a weapon.
