Guild Wars 2 Item Upgrade
The stats of an item are improved through upgrading it, which is also known as "upping". Each upgrade increment results in an increase in linearity of a given stat.
Players can recycle six items at one time to gain a gauge for the upgraded component of each item. The cost of recycling items scales with their rarity and item level.
Upgrade components
In Guild Wars 2, an upgrade of an item can be a method to boost the stats of your weapon and armor. This can be done through many different methods, including using upgrade components and upgrading an item's mark level or rarity. Many items can also be reforged to boost their stats.

The most common method of upgrading equipment is through the use of upgrade components which are the items that can be slotted into equipment. Choose the item from your inventory, and then open the Upgrade window. This will display a preview on the right side of the screen, showing the expected stats after the upgrade, and any required components or materials. The Upgrade button at the bottom will be labeled as Blocked if you do not have enough of or.
The number of upgrade components required for a specific item can be seen in the upper-right corner of the Upgrade window. The cost of an upgrade increases with the upgrade level and rarity, but it can be reduced by various ways, such as purchasing upgrades at a merchant or trading them to other players.
Most weapons can be upgraded with an upgrade to a prefix like an insignia, or a rune. Many can be upgraded using an upgrade suffix. These upgrades alter the name of the item to add an adjective, like "Radiant" or "Minor vigor.' The exceptions are the noninscribable wands, foci and shields from the Prophecies and Factions campaigns, which are not upgradeable with any kinds of mods.
Glyphs
Glyphs are a way to convey information via visuals. They are animated to grab the attention of the viewer and stimulate interest in the brain. The glyphs' animation mimics the body language, making them more effective in communicating an inter-linguistic message. Glyphs also improve the recall of the message by triggering an emotional connection in the brain.
Each glyph can increase the value of a stat by certain range. This is shown on the item, when you open it in the Glyph Storage. This isn't the actual amount by which the glyph will increase a stat, but the maximum amount by which it can increase a stat. The value of the glyph depends on the tier as well as the quality of the item you are enchanting.
The majority of upgrade components that are added to items cannot be removed or replaced without removing them, with the exception of legendary equipment and upgrades. If you have a rune or glyph you don't want to use, but it's not been applied to the gear yet, you can move the item to a different piece by selecting the Upgrade Glyphs menu in the Glyphs Panel. This will create a new Glyph Set with the selected glyph.
You can remove the glyph using the Black Lion Salvage Kit, or an Ascended Salvage tool. The item on which the glyph is installed will be destroyed, however the upgraded item can be salvaged using the glyph shards.
When you remove an item after adding a glyph the shards of the glyph will vanish. You can also add a glyph to your equipment to give it a bonus. Deferred Damage, for example can be used to store damage and then be dealt slowly to the wearer instead of all at once. This is helpful for players who are taking lots of damage from enemies however do not want to be overwhelmed.
Reroll tokens
Reroll tokens allow players to alter the affixes they use on their equipment and weapons, and they can be obtained in a variety of ways, including in mistery boxes or as a rare drop from skulled creatures, or from killing bosses. Reroll tokens give the player a new random affix, which is usually superior to the original. Reroll tokens can also be a good method to reroll the stats of a weapon and can be upgraded to provide better damage or perks.
Rerolled items don't appear on the menu for item upgrades, but they can still be upgraded. If you click the "upgrade button" you can recycle these items that have been rerolled. This will alter the design of the item's window, and allow up to six items to be chosen for recycling. Recycling an item adds a small amount of points to its gauge of level. upgrade item is by the item's rarity as well as its level. Therefore, items that are higher level are more valuable to recycle than those with lower levels.
Players can also make use of Reroll Tokens and Star Remnants to roll rerolling weapons to upgrade units. Rerolls will determine the percentage chance of a weapon trait; if it rolls higher, the weapon will be upgraded, and if it is lower, it remains the same. Weapons can be upgraded up to 3 times.
A reroll is a good option to upgrade an item, however, players should be aware that it will reduce the total ilvl of the weapon by the number of rerolls required in order to increase it to the final level. This effect is most noticeable on Rings and Diadems as they have no other options to raise the ilvl.
The Reroll system has been criticized by players for being expensive and it's more fair to let people pay for it with money or a food item which would allow them to change their builds without spending too much time and effort. However, paid rerolls are not something that the developers would like to incorporate at this point in the game's development. They're planning to include an ingredient that allows players to change their race in the future.
Leveling
There are a variety of ways to boost the value of an upgrade for an item. The first method of leveling up an item upgrade is by increasing the amount of upgrade. This increases the upgrade value for a stat. The second is to boost the effect of an upgrade which increases the healing or damage of a given stat. The base item can be upgraded to a more advanced upgrade type. When this is done the new item will retain its iLevel but it will have the upgrade effects of the upgraded item type.
It is crucial to keep in mind that upgrades can be random. In most cases a better roll is based on the glyphs. However there are instances when a greater or special roll may occur. Additionally the iLevel of the upgrade will be determined by the item type and if you upgrade a rare or unique item to an exceptional item type you could achieve an iLevel that is higher.
Upgrades can be costly, especially if you are upgrading equipment from the standard track to legendary. The price will depend on the item's base iLevel and the amount of upgrade levels it has. Some upgrade tracks also require crests to reach the next level.
If you're lucky the upgraded item will reach the highest level on its upgrade track, and will unlock an additional benefit. This will give the item a significant upgrade value. The bonus effect can change with each upgrade level, however. In general, the upgrade effect is increased by a factor of +3.
Depending on the item's base level and upgrade process, the iLevel for the upgraded item will also change. For instance, a weapon that is upgraded from a unique or rare to a rare or exceptional item will be able to be upgraded to the Enhanced Defense of the base type of item.
